ABOUT MINIMALLY INVASIVE CARDIAC SURGERY
Home to the region’s most specialized cardiac services, the QEII Health Sciences Centre is where nearly every heart health patient in Nova Scotia receives emergency or follow-up care — making advancements like this critical for patients across the province.
The QEII’s minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) program launched with mitral valve repairs and is now expanding to include additional procedures, including aortic and tricuspid valve repair. Using small incisions between the ribs — along with a 3D camera and specialized instruments — surgeons can repair the heart without opening the breastbone.
For patients who are eligible, that can mean a significantly smaller incision, shorter hospital stays and a faster return to daily life.
With donor support, the QEII’s MICS program will continue to grow — treating more patients, expanding the procedures available, and helping recruit, train and retain top medical talent.
